Marketing Film Questions

1) My beautiful laundrette was made in 1985.
2) The production company was Working Title.
3) Characters: Hussein family (Nasser, Salim, Ali and Omar)
Setting: London
Style: Comedy, Drama, Romance
4) Selling points for this film include; having Daniel Day Lewis in it, being one of Working Titles first films and being one of the first films about gay Pakistanis.
5) Back in 1985 this film would have been hard to sell as it was about gay Pakistanis. Most people had never seen a film about this as it was a bit of a taboo subject. Now it may be harder to sell as it is classed as an old film and compared to films that are out at the moment and the editing they use, it would probably pale by comparison. Films now are full of special effects and use big actors and actresses, MBLaundrette doesn't.
6) Synopsis from the Working Title website: My beautiful laundrette is set in London during the Thatcher years and is the story of Omar (Gordon Warnecke), a young Asian man who takes over his uncle's laundrette. He is helped by his white boyfriend Johnny (Daniel Day-Lewis), who in turn is harranged by his neo-nazi friends who are out to taunt him for his association with Omar.

Merlin - Camera shots

  • At the begining there is a two shot between Merlin and Arthur. These two characters are almost always shot together will Merlin slightly behind Arthur. This signifies that Arthur is the more dominant of the two and could also connote that Merlin is of lower status, thus following him. This is in comparison to Knight Valient who is always shot by himself.
  • A shot, reverse shot is used during the scene were Knight Valiant and Arthur are talking.
  • A over the shoulder shot is used when Knight Valient is talking to the King, this is also used when Arthur is talking to the King.
  • The main lady's slave is black which could also be a indication about the time period it is set, as most slaves were black.
  • When Arthur and the main lady are speaking to each other, the shot used is a reaction shot.
  • When Merlin is using his magic to clean the armour the camera tracks each item, there is also a reaction shot when Merlin is caught using his magic. The shot goes from Merlin to the man and back to Merlin.
  • Stereotypically women were ment to clean however Merlin is forced to do this as well as dress Arthur.
  • At the very begining of the clip during the fight scene we see a close up of a shield and a sword falling to the ground. This signifies that it is not set in modern times
  • There is also the use of slight slowmotion and slow takes which creates a dramatic atmosphere.
  • The use of a medium long shot on Knight Valient connotes masculinity and power.

Merlin - Mise-en-scene

The colours used for the tents and various other items throughout the clip are ones that are normally associated in medieval times. For example the use of the colour red and yellow together.
The rooms featured are very simplistic and the walls are made from stone which could signify a castle. However the rooms do all have candles. This is another signifier that the setting is in a castle or that it is set in the medieval times. As well as having candles instead of lights, as they did not have electricity during that time period, there is an item used for fighting in almost every room featured in the clip. There are swords, shields, chain mail and various other items which

Merlin - Editing

Editing has been used for the scene in which the young boy (Merlin) cleans items of armour using magic. The items were 'floating' in the middle of the room whilst cloths, which were also floating, were polishing them.
Later on in the clip the use of magic is shown again when a snake on a shield comes to life and starts to move as well as hiss.
Elliptical editing has been used frequently throughout this clip, for example when Merlin is putting on his masters armour for him the process is sped up. This is also used during the fight scene near the end of the clip. The fight as well as being elliptical has the use of short takes which

Bradford Film Festival Review

For this film festival i was reviewing Screening 3.
I started talking to three film makers in front of us who had come all the way from Essex just to see their friends music video. The music video was a copy of 'feeling good' by Muse and most of us agreed that it was one of the best we had seen that day.
The were numerous films varying from animations done by primary schools to 'documentary' type films putting across points such as stopping bullying.
As well as having a wide range of age groups there were also numerous genres, including humorous, serious and

Skins

  • Older teenage audience (the box set is rated as 18. )
  • Title sequence contains; nudity, smoking, drugs, alcohol (excessive drinking), Relationships - possibly sexual.
  • The music is upbeat and light (almost classical). This is a contrast to the content of the actual programme.
  • Image of a boy and a girl walking on a Moor - possible relationship?
  • Starts with blue sky, moving onto still water then goes to a smoke image (could signify smoke from a cigarette?)
  • The cast are teenagers at school/college - girl in a uniform.
  • Diversity; sexual orientation, gender, ethnicity
  • Establishing shot or just long shot of the whole cast.
  • Then focusing on one particular character at the end of the title sequence. The episode will then focus on that character throughout.

Newspapers: The Telegraph

The Telegraph

1) The political/ideological bias of this newspaper:

The Telegraph is Conservative and as such has been named by some as 'The Torygraph'.

2) The political party the newspaper would historically support:

In the early years, The Telegraph is said to have been associated with the Liberal party as well as Gladstone.

3) Expectations on: Youth

The Telegraph are negative about teenagers in Britain and try to portray them in a bad light.

   Expectations on: Royalty

Because The Telegraph is a Conservative party supporter they are most likely going to be positive about royalty.

Expectations on: The invasion in Iraq

Again, as they are right wing The Telegraph will be positive about the invasion in Iraq. According to some people on forums the Conservative party 'is not racist only anti-illegal immagration'. However a Tory councillor was suspended after Mr Fraser made derogatory comments about Romanians at a public meeting and also said that some Europeans "make the Irish look like complete amateurs".
